Spiralling Into Control Garden

This month we’ve been working to support the Spiralling Into Control garden at the RHS Tatton Flower Show, by donating our Derbyshire Gold, market leading Goldpath and striking Scottish Boulders.

The garden, which was designed by Simon Fagg and built by Appleyard Landscape is part of the RHS’ Greening Grey Britain campaign and aimed to show visitors that they can create a front garden that incorporates the functionality of everyday life, alongside inspirational planting and sustainable water management.

The design offers a responsible way of dealing with rainwater runoff with its green roofed car port and the SuDS compliant Flexi-Pave surfacing, supplied by KBI. The Flexi-Pave offers a completely porous system that allows water to fully drain into the ground and was constructed using Long Rake Spar’s Goldpath as a subbase.

Goldpath was chosen because of its natural setting properties, which bind the gravel together to create a compacted surface that remains firmer than conventional loose aggregate. In this garden, Goldpath provides additional support for the Flexi-Pave and its unique colouring blends with the Derbyshire Gold used on the planting beds.

With its bright colouring, the Derbyshire Gold chippings which surround the striking central spiral provide a distinctive contrast to the drought resistant green planting and the pink wooden sleepers of the raised beds.

As well as offering a practical car parking area, Spiralling Into Control demonstrates how various aspects of gardening can be incorporated into an efficient and versatile space. Vegetable and composting areas have been created alongside dedicated wildlife segments such as the sunken raingarden that is banked by Scottish Boulders to support a variety of habitats.

The garden offers a unique experience to visitors at Tatton by showing how sustainability and planting can be integrated into any design when creating a front garden which is used for parking.

Long Rake Spar Acquires New Site in Rye

As the UK’s leading decorative aggregate supplier, Long Rake Spar continuously strives to improve the service that it offers to customers. At the forefront of this, is their new site acquisition in Rye, East Sussex which offers new opportunities for the company to increase their exposure in the South East.

The acquisition of the 20 acre dock and storage facility in Rye comes as part of Long Rake Spar’s long term expansion strategy, which has previously seen the company move from strength to strength as a supplier to various industry sectors.

The new location offers unparalleled logistical efficiency, giving in the South of England and London the opportunity to source products from a local site, thus decreasing the cost and carbon footprint of their supply chain.

Achieving economic and environmental sustainability when supplying customers in the South East has always been a challenge for the company, with the majority of their best-selling products being transported from their main site in Derbyshire.

Managing Director Trevor Broadhurst commented: “The acquisition of Romney Holdings in Rye is a strategic investment for us to expand our presence in the South of England. The additional facilities will provide valuable storage and manufacturing capacity to enable us to meet growing demand for our products and continue to provide our customers with the excellent levels of support our clients expect.”

“As one of the largest importers of decorative aggregates in the UK, the location of the site was paramount. Rye represents a crucial gateway for importing and exporting exclusive European and worldwide material and the site will allow us to continue to lead the way in product development.” Once developed, the site will greatly increase Long Rake Spar’s stock holding facilities enabling the company to respond more rapidly to customer demands and increase their presence in the South East market.

The investment at Rye comes as part of a series of recent developments in the business to enhance their focus on customer service. Marketing Director Sarah Hill said “understanding customer feedback is critical to developing lasting working relationships. At Long Rake Spar we create valued partnerships with merchants by supporting them through our exclusive product range and specialist merchandising.”

The site acquisition at Rye and continued emphasis on product development and merchandising support will allow Long Rake Spar to maintain their position as the leading decorative aggregate supplier to specifiers and landscapers in the UK. Creating Sustainable Road Surfaces

At the end of last year Transport Secretary Patrick Mcloughlin announced an unprecedented level of funding for the maintenance and construction of the UK’s road network. The proposal, which includes £4.7 billion worth of backing for local councils to repair pot holes along with the construction of 1,300 new lane miles nationally, seeks to reverse the attitude of tackling problems in infrastructure on a short term basis. The pledge of £15 billion signals a positive and sustainable shift within the highway maintenance industry, however it raises various challenges which must be addressed before the proposed schemes can be fulfilled.

With the Highways Agency estimating that between 20,000 and 60,000 tonnes of quarried aggregates are needed for the construction of a single mile of motorway, and with a target of 80% of all Highways Agency roads needing to be resurfaced over the next 5 years, the demand for high specification aggregates is at a premium.

New road networks are required to have a minimum life expectancy of ten years and must be able to withstand 10,000 vehicles per day whilst being sustainable and safe for drivers. The Highways Agency ‘Sustainable Development: Vision and Action Plan’ proposes that roads must “provide a national network that allows safe, efficient movement of goods and people, in a cost effective manner which minimises environmental and social harm and seeks enhancement wherever possible”. This quest for sustainability will define the need for alternative surface treatments on new build and existing roads, with undoubtedly high friction surfacing playing an increasing role in meeting these guidelines.

The government’s investment in the UK’s road infrastructure comes at a time when road safety is paramount in the public eye; skid resistant surfaces provide a sustainable solution in both increasing road longevity and decreasing road traffic accidents.

High speed skid resistance and its dependence on macro-texture systems will inevitably lead to a heightened demand for aggregates with a high Polished Stone Value (PSV). The PSV rating of calcined bauxites and other specialised aggregates, determines their inclusion within highway surfacing, in areas of braking, acceleration and manoeuvering at speed. In these areas the pulling force of the moving vehicle exceeds the limiting friction force that is generated by the current contact between the tyre and the road interface.

The physical properties of aggregates such as calcined bauxites, iron silicates and chrome slags create the harshness and coarseness of the finished surface, increasing the friction force that acts upon the vehicle. In wet weather, the angular nature of these aggregates facilitates the breakthrough of water films which develop on the road surface, substantially increasing contact between the tyre tread and the road below.

The high specification of aggregates in skid resistant zones means that their production process must be closely monitored. Each aggregate source is meticulously measured to ensure that it meets industry requirements in Impact Value (AIV), Abrasion Value (AAV) and its Polished Stone Value. PSV values in excess of 58 are generally used in highway wearing courses; however, aggregates with a PSV rating of 70 and above are more commonly used in skid resistant surfaces.

The durability of materials is a major consideration when specifying aggregate in the system as this will lead to a reduction in cost and maintenance. Durability is measured through the Los Angeles Coefficient (LA), which determines its resistance to fragmentation and its placement on the Moh scale, measuring its hardness to other materials.

Aggregates are washed to remove excessive dust particles which lessen the effect of resin binders. After this they are dried to remove moisture which can create separation between the aggregate, the surface beneath and the binding agent, resulting in problems at installation and decreasing the life expectancy of the system. The aggregate is then screened to determine various sizes of granules for use in a wide range of applications. Skid resistant surfaces typically incorporate 0.9-1.4mm and 1-3mm Calcined Bauxite which is laid on top of the resin coating creating a raised texture on the surface.

The durability of high performance skid resistant aggregates means that their longevity exceeds that of standard tarmac systems, making them a more sustainable alternative to bitumen surface dressings in terms of durability and performance. The significant reductions in wet weather skidding and aquaplaning that high friction surfaces provide, mean that they offer social and economic benefits as a result of fewer accidents on the road.

The proposed expansion in road infrastructure will lead to an increase in demand on white lining materials, along with coloured aggregates for lane demarcation schemes. With many local Councils already carrying out bus lane constructions and high friction surfacing on a national scale, this extensive surge in product requirements will potentially put a strain on imported high performance minerals such as bauxite, but also the processing capacities of companies providing the dried aggregates and minerals for UK sourced products. With high friction surfacing potentially seeing a major increase over the next five years, the suppliers and installers of these products will play a pivotal role, under increasing pressure, in delivering the Government’s long term strategy to provide a sustainable, safer road network.

Long Rake Spar work closely with RSMA and the UK’s major system installers, producing an extensive selection of high friction surfacing and white lining aggregates and sands for use within high friction surfacing. Dan Travis – Special Products Manager at Long Rake states “quantifying the demand for these products needs to be closely monitored from the design and development stage, through to us, as suppliers of these products. This ensures a seamless, continuity of supply of not only the imported products such as Bauxite, but also the staple everyday aggregates and sands used in the implementation of high friction surfacing and white lining.”

If local councils and national government are truly committed to providing UK-wide improvements in road infrastructure then high friction surfacing must be a serious consideration for the Highway Agency and planners in reducing traffic accidents and increasing the life expectancy of roads.

New Pastures for our Winding Engine

At the end of 2014 we donated our Long Rake Mine Winding engine to the Peak District Mines Historical Society.

The duplex geared winding engine originally operated cages which travelled up and down the mine shaft, it was able to carry 3 men to the 300 level. It was installed in 1926 and powered by a 12HP vertical boiler with a weir boiler feed pump but ceased use when mining on the rake stopped in 1981.

After a period of restoration the engine will be given pride of place as an exhibit at the Temple Mine site of the Peak District Lead Mining Museum.

The Temple Mine museum is a working 1920s lead and fluorspar mine where visitors can experience an authentic insight into life underground alongside an extensive collection of items from mines around the Peak District, personal belongings left by miners and a wide range of minerals.

RSMA Conference Nov 2014

A very interesting conference was hosted by the RSMA at Eastwood Hall, where Richard, Dan and Sarah attended and exhibited our Grantex dried aggregates.

The RSMA had appointed many speakers and interesting subjects which were engaging and informative, providing a selection of useful and thought provoking messages, particularly the Mock Trial which prompted at least one of our customers to review his policy on the use of mobile phones by his contractors.

The casino evening provided a great opportunity to mix and network with lots of customers, suppliers and contractors providing us with a very diverse insight into the industry and what part our business can play as suppliers.

Sarah attended the Safer Surfacing Seminars with key speakers –

Robert Dingess, President of Geospartial Transportation Mapping Association from the USALINK to ATSSA – some interesting reading

Robert provided a fantastic insight into High Friction Surfacing in the USA, which was enlightening in the fact that the USA was seriously lagging behind, compared to the UK “we are now where the UK was in 1970” was his exact phrase. Further enlightening was that the USA only legislated a minimum PSV value for roads, when the ATSSA council was formed, in 2013. With over 33,000 fatalities on the USA road networks annually it is understandable why Robert so appreciatively looked up to the UK High Friction Surfacing Industry as leaders in this industry and the ones to emulate.

Steve Hunt from BBALINK to BBA Thin Surfacing

Steve illustrated through a series of graphs and slides the long term lifespan of thermoplastic and thermosetting surfacing. His analysis of over 200 sites concluded that the merits of thermoplastics and thermosetting products within high friction surfacing indicated that a working life greater than 5 years is achievable, subject primarily to the condition of the substrate on which it is applied.

Donald Burton – Highways Agency

Donald advised of the restructure of the Highways Agency on 1st April 2015, with an increase budget spend of £1.5 billion/year over the course of the next 5 years, to resurface 80% of the Highways Agency road network. Something we can all hope triggers increased growth within our various supply sectors.

A very enjoyable two days was had by our team who vastly enjoyed the networking opportunity with fellow members of the RSMA. These events provide a great opportunity to connect with existing and potential customers whilst enforcing stronger working relations within the industry.

I am sure there will be lots of sore heads following the annual dinner however we can all look forward to a long recoup before the next event.

Road Markings Live 2014
