Premium Collection FAQs
Gravel is a small, naturally rounded stone formed through the process of weathering and water erosion. It has a softer, more natural appearance but can shift more easily underfoot due to its smooth shape.
Chippings mainly consist of small, angular, crushed stones. The irregular shape means the pieces can interlock to provide a compact surface and are better suited for driveways, paths and high-use areas.
Pebbles are naturally rounded and smooth, making them a popular choice for aesthetically pleasing garden features. They are generally too big to be used for driveways and footpaths (there are exceptions), but make stunning borders, beds and areas of interest.
Cobbles are naturally rounded and smooth, like pebbles, but are larger in size. They are heavier and more substantial, making them a popular choice for water features, rockeries, gabions and edging.
Functionality - the aggregate needs to work hard and perform well where it’s placed. Angular stones can interlock, so they are ideal choices for driveways. Pebbles are excellent for pleasing aesthetics for general garden features and look great when teamed up with gravel and cobbles. Cobbles are excellent for edging, water features or rockeries.
Aesthetics - Products like our Black Ice offer a modern, dark look, whereas Spanish Gold provides a bright, clean look. You should also consider how the colourings will change when the stones are dry or wet.
Durability - some materials are much more durable than others, making them better suited to high-traffic areas. Granite and basalt are extremely tough and weather-resistant and recommended for high traffic areas such as driveways and paths.

For best results, use premium products and ensure the layer of aggregate is at least 50mm deep (depending on the aggregate used) to block sunlight from reaching the soil.
