National Sales Director Shane McCormick Upholds Ancient City Tradition

Shane McCormick, National Sales Director, has proudly taken part in one of the City of London’s most historic ceremonies. He has been busy driving sheep across Southwark Bridge.

The occasion recognises Shane’s role as a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants, following his admission to the Freedom of the City of London in 2024. The Freedom, which dates back to 1237, originally denoted those who were not the property of a feudal lord and granted important rights, including the ability to trade within the City and exemption from tolls when crossing with livestock.

While these privileges are no longer required in the modern City, the symbolic right to drive sheep remains a celebrated tradition. This unique custom has been embraced by notable figures over the years, including Mary Berry and actor Damian Lewis.

Shane joined fellow Freemen in proudly driving a small flock of sheep across the bridge, marking his place in this centuries-old ceremony.

Reflecting on the day, Shane commented, “Being part of such an historic tradition is an honour and certainly not something that features in a typical sales director’s job description. It was a privilege to represent the Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants and Long Rake Spar in a way that celebrates both heritage and community.”

The Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants, founded in 1961, is one of the City of London’s modern Livery Companies, supporting the builders merchants industry while contributing widely to charitable and civic life.
