Chester Zoo had a bold vision: to create new immersive visitor zones that would bring people closer to nature while blending beautifully into the surrounding landscape. As part of this large-scale transformation, the team needed a surface that would complement the naturalistic design and stand up to the high foot traffic of one of the UK’s most popular zoos. For that, they turned to Grantex’s high-quality dried aggregates.
In collaboration with Coatech and Addagrip, Grantex supplied the materials for the new zones, ‘Heart of Africa’ and ‘The Reserve’. So far, around 3,200m² of Addagrip’s Pecan blend has been installed at a consistent 18mm depth, with a final 800m² currently underway. The Pecan blend was chosen for its warm, earthy tones, which align perfectly with the zoo’s landscape vision and help create a seamless, natural look throughout the space.
Working closely with the skilled team at Coatech, the installation has been delivered to meet the demanding specifications of the site. The result is a surface that not only enhances the visitor experience but also provides essential benefits like durability, permeability, slip resistance, and low maintenance.
As Chester Zoo continues to expand its world-class facilities, Grantex is proud to support its mission. We’re honoured to help create inspiring spaces that connect people with wildlife and support conservation through thoughtful, high-performance design.
